Your destiny lies in your own hands

I had my twelfth session with Trevor on Thursday morning. I hadn’t done any exercise since the Sunday before as I’d been ill and I’d also had a weird problem with my fingertips earlier in the week and was in a lot of pain. I got to the gym and Trevor was already there with a scary 10-kg kettlebell. As I did my 5-minute warm-up on the cross-trainer he asked me if I’d done any exercise. I told him I hadn’t and told him what had happened to my fingers. ‘Have you been doing push-ups with your three fingers again?’ he asked. ‘Oh yeah, I do that all the time when you’re not around,’ I replied. ‘I don’t want you to know how fit I really am.’ This seemed to amuse him.

The kettlebell circuit consisted of:

I actually laughed when Trevor demonstrated the Kettlebell Turkish get-up. I mean, really. Who did he think I was?? I did try it, and couldn’t get past the second step (moving my leg behind me and standing up) so I ended up doing half get-ups (still 5 on each side). After I’d been through the circuit once he told me that in the next round, I’d have 30 seconds of exercise and 20 seconds of rest for each one. He also changed the order – so I started with regular kettlebell swings followed by the windmill and then the single arm swings. I was really struggling with the single arm swings – 10 kg is heavy – and my back was starting to ache! So he abandoned the circuit and I spent the last 10 minutes on the treadmill walking at 5.5 km/h at an incline of 5%.

Trevor told me that after the kettlebell circuit my back would feel sore the following day. But by the time I left my office on Thursday evening I could already feel my muscles aching!

That was the only workout I did in the week and my muscles ached for the rest of the weekend.

Low point of the week? Making it to the gym only once.

High point of the week? I can’t think of anything!

Weight loss? I’m still at 73-74 kg, although went down to 71 kg again on Friday…
