Your destiny lies in your own hands

I was keen to get back on track after doing nothing in Week 7 but I didn’t feel like I was ready for a session with Rama on Sunday morning.

I started with what I thought would be the easier option – yoga on Monday morning – to ease me in gently. It was a good class and I think I coped well – apart from the coughing fit after being in shoulderstand. By the end of the day I could feel my muscles starting to ache. It had only been 10 days since my last work-out but the difference was noticeable.

I didn’t do anything on Tuesday, but on Wednesday I had my first session with Rama in two weeks. It was painful. I felt like I was starting all over again. I told him I needed an easy(ish) session!

I did my five-minute warm-up on the cross-trainer and we began a circuit alternating resistance and cardio.

  • 30 seconds of bench presses using 3-kg weights
  • 30 seconds on the cross-trainer
  • 30 seconds stepping on and off the treadmill (while it was stationary) with 10-lb weights
  • 30 seconds on the bike
  • 30 seconds of barbell rows
  • 30 seconds on the cross-trainer
  • 30 seconds of push-ups
  • 30 seconds on the bike
  • Rest

The second and third times I did the circuit I did 45 seconds of the resistance exercises but kept the cardio at 30 seconds. After that I did some tricep extensions, some single-leg lunges using the bench (which were bloody hard), and then it was on to the floor for some more lower body and abs exercises. I’m not sure if that session can be described as going easy on me!

On Thursday we had another yoga class. I was feeling sore from Wednesday’s session at the gym, but I coped OK. I was in pain all over on Friday though. I hadn’t felt that sore in a long time! I didn’t work out on Friday – I planned to on Saturday but it didn’t happen. I also didn’t want to do too much too soon as I was still coughing a little bit.

I did, however, weigh myself on Thursday – I’d lost a further 0.9 kilos, bringing my total weight loss up to 11.8 kilos (just over 25 lbs)! It could be because I wasn’t very well the week before, but I’m glad the weight is still coming off!
