10 kilos by Easter? Week 13

Sunday morning = Rama. While doing my warm-up on the cross-trainer, Rama told me he was going to switch the order of the exercises. Instead of doing the lower body floorwork at the end of the session I was going to do it at the beginning. I did pelvic lifts, pelvic lifts with my feet on a Swiss ball, hamstring curls with my feet on a Swiss ball, and some other things. After that I started a circuit we’d done AGES ago. It consisted of:

  • Push-ups x 15
  • Squats x 20
  • Star jumps x 20
  • Jogging on the spot x 30 seconds
  • Wall squat x 30 seconds
  • Burpees x 15
  • Stair climbers x 20 (the leg switching things I had no name for earlier)
  • Crunches x 20
  • Plank x 30 seconds
  • Bear crawl x 2 lengths of the gym
  • Tricep dips x 15
  • Punches holding 3-kg weights x 20

The first time I did that circuit it took me 8 minutes and 19 seconds. This time I did it in 6 minutes and 43 seconds – and there were a couple of extra things thrown in too (an extra length of the bear crawl). I couldn’t breathe, my throat was parched and I felt sick.

As I recovered with a towel and a bottle of water, believing the worst was over, he said ‘OK, you’re going to do that one more time.’

Eh? ‘I’ve never done it twice before, have I?’ I asked.

‘Nope,’ he replied.

‘You’re fired,’ I muttered under my breath. I don’t think he heard me.

‘Your time might improve the second time round,’ he said. If I’d had the energy I would have laughed. Yeah. Right.

I did the circuit again. I figured the faster I did everything, the sooner it would be over. Sure enough, I shaved off 20 seconds in the second round! There were some abs exercises after that and some stretching, and then I was done for the day. 

I had my usual yoga class on Monday. It was just me as my cousin cancelled at short notice. Each class is mostly the same – although he does introduce new poses every now and then. On Monday he demonstrated the side plank – and I just couldn’t do it. I know I used to be able to (at some point in the past) but on Monday I fell flat on my ass. Twice. Once on each side.

On Tuesday I spent 45 minutes on the treadmill. I’ve noticed that the gym is becoming busier in the mornings. Four out of five mornings I’d be the only in there, but in the last couple of weeks there are always two or three other women in there. I’m not sure I like it. 

I had another session with Rama on Wednesday. We walked into the gym and two maintenance men were changing all the lightbulbs. There was broken glass and dust all over the place – they started clearing up while I was doing my warm-up on the cross-trainer. I thought that because it was my 20th session (20th!) Rama would make me do the same fitness assessment as in the first and 10th sessions, but he didn’t. I wasn’t sure whether to be relieved or not because I wondered what else had in store for me. We did two to three sets of various exercises followed by a rest. It went (something) like this:

  • Squats with weights x 15
  • Squat star jumps x 10 
  • Rest (and then repeated twice)
  • Wall squat x 30 seconds
  • One-legged lunges x 10
  • Sumo squats x 10
  • Rest (and then repeated once)
  • Tricep dips x 15
  • Tricep extensions x 15
  • Kickbacks x 10
  • Rest (and repeated once)

I’m sure there was other stuff too but for the life of me I can’t remember what I did. After these sets there were lower body exercises and two sets of ab exercises and that was it. I can’t believe I’ve had 20 sessions with Rama already.

By the time we left the gym there were four other women in there. I think because the temperature is heating up fewer people are exercising outdoors. 

On Thursday I had some errands to run so I was at the gym a bit later, at 11am. It was empty. I was there for an hour and nobody came in. I think the Easter holidays have started.

I don’t usually go to the gym on Fridays but I decided to this week as I knew I wouldn’t get round to it on Saturday. My cousin was coming into town from London for the long weekend and I had a sneaky suspicion we’d be too tired and/or hungover on Saturday morning (and I was right). I spent 45 minutes on the treadmill (all three treadmills were being used and there were a couple of people on the cross-trainers too). 

Weight loss this week? Another 0.5 kilo. And I have no idea how with the amount I’d eaten all week (I was out for lunch three times during the week). So my total weight loss now is 12.7 kilos (just under 28 lbs). And I’m still stuck at that 12 kg mark. The good news is that this week I saw several people I hadn’t seen in a few weeks and they all commented on how much weight I’d lost, including one woman from the building who I used to see at the gym but haven’t in the last month or so. In fact, my dad said that by the time I get to London at the end of May I will probably need a new wardrobe. 

Have I noticed any changes this week? I can slide off my watch without undoing the clasp. I’ve been wearing my denim shorts to the pool and this week I could take them off without undoing them. And my swimsuit is a little big too. 

So my original plan was to lose 10 kilos by Christmas and a further 10 kilos by Easter. Clearly that hasn’t happened but I’ll keep at it. Any suggestions? How can I get over this plateau?
