Your destiny lies in your own hands

On Saturday night Trevor texted me to ask if we could have our session at 8:30 instead of 10:30. Wow, that’s early – but I thought it would be good to get it out of the way. I was up at 7:30 and was at the gym by 8:30. Trevor asked me how I was getting on with the new work-out he’d given me. I told him it was OK but asked if I could swap the lunges for something else as they were starting to aggravate my left knee. He told me to swap the alternating lunges for deadlifts. I did my warm-up on the bike and then got on the treadmill.

Trevor told me I’d be doing the metabolic work-out I’d done a couple of weeks before.

  • Treadmill at 5 km/h x 30 seconds
  • Treadmill at 7 km/h x 1 minute
  • Combined squat/twist x 1 minute (not on the treadmill, obviously)
  • Treadmill at 5 km/h x 30 seconds
  • Treadmill at 7 km/h x 1 minute
  • Squats with one foot on the treadmill x 1 minute
  • Treadmill at 5 km/h x 30 seconds
  • Treadmill at 7 km/h x 1 minute
  • Burpees x 1 minute
  • Treadmill at 5 km/h x 30 seconds
  • Treadmill at 7 km/h x 1 minute
  • Tricep dips x 1 minute
  • Treadmill at 5 km/h x 30 seconds
  • Treadmill at 7 km/h x 1 minute
  • Mountain-climbers x 1 minute
  • Treadmill at 5 km/h x 30 seconds
  • Treadmill at 7 km/h x 1 minute
  • Combined bench squats/shoulder press (3-kg weights) x 1 minute

I took a short water break and then put on some boxing gloves. We did a few punch, jab, hook combinations for about 10 minutes and then I spent 5 minutes on the cross-trainer. After that I did the following abs circuit:

  • Russian twists (3-kg weight) x 20
  • Sit-ups (3-kg weight) x 20
  • In and out x 20
  • Plank x 30 seconds
  • Rest x 30 seconds
  • Repeat

It was tough. And I was glad when it was all over! I did some stretching after that and then was done. I went home, had an omelette and some tea and had the whole day ahead of me. It was quite nice!

On Monday I did the new circuit that Trevor showed me the week before. I did 18 minutes on the treadmill (I cheated a bit and reduced the incline for the last 6 minutes) and then did two rounds of the circuit: step-ups, dumbbell punches, squats, dead lifts, mountain climbers and abdominal in and outs. It was exhausting.

I had a yoga class on Tuesday morning – it’s only been three weeks but I can already feel the difference when I’m in various poses.

I took the day off on Wednesday and went back to the gym on Thursday. I decided I’d do the full 20 minutes on the treadmill before starting the circuit. As I entered the 20th minute, my hand hit the stop button by mistake and I thought ‘Oh FFS.’ It didn’t make sense to wait for the machine to reset itself just for 1 minute so I started the circuit. I did three rounds of the circuit, reducing the number of reps by 2 each time. It was tough but I got through it.

And that was my week as I didn’t work out over the weekend at all.

Low point of the week? My left knee has been aching slightly.

High point of the week? Working out four times this week. I also decided to wear dresses over the weekend instead of jeans/trousers – and everyone told me I looked great.

Weight loss? None.

This is exactly how I feel!
